Senior Systems Support Specialist (Government)



Job Description Summary

Responsible for maintaining Core Processing database performing updates/upgrades. Responsible for database system administration duties to ensure optimum system performance and system availability. Applies expertise of database environments to improve and maintain application processing efficiency. Monitors and supports associated hardware, software, Linux operating system, and Oracle databases; Performs administration and maintenance of assigned core business systems and processes including, but not limited to installation, routine maintenance, upgrades, and software and database trouble-shooting; assists in testing and implementing system updates and fixes; assists in maintaining, configuring, and installing upgrades to the CMC, SAF, DNA Contact and Multipoint systems; provides technical training to Data Center staff on processes and procedures; and performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Backup to Database Administrator on day-to-day procedures. Senior Systems Support Specialist is distinguished from System Support Specialists by the responsibility for performing more complex core systems administration duties requiring a detailed knowledge of the Oracle database and Core Processing System operations and associated hardware, software and databases. Provides advanced technical support for issues that arise both during business hours and outside of normal business hours.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • System administration of multiple core system environments including production, train, development, and test servers, including Oracle and SQL databases, Linux OS and applicable core processing software applications Monitors and reports on database health and performance.

  • Perform database management performance tuning and critical purge processes, performs server and database back up processes and monitors to ensure their successful completion to maintain core processing system availability and maintain a high level of system performance.

  • Provides technical guidance when reviewing schedules and advises on methodologies, plans and technical solutions; ensures all objectives meet business unit requirements and expectations and are completed in accordance with corporate standards and guidelines; stays alert to opportunities to more fully deploy and utilize functional capabilities of the Core Processing Systems in meeting business requirements.

  • Applies and tests Linux OS, SQL and Oracle database system updates, hot fixes, patches.

  • Provides advanced technical guidance and mentoring to staff. Develops, maintains, updates and communicates procedures.

  • Develops automation schedules to perform daily, weekly and monthly processing and reporting; monitors the operational status of Core Processing system hardware, software, Linux OS, SQL and Oracle databases. Ensures that batch processing jobs are run as scheduled and completed accurately

  • Maintains, configures and applies upgrades/updates to the Application Manager automation database and application. Establishes, manages, monitors, and configures batch processes involving scheduling, parameters and updates of critical business processes; interacts with other Business Owners and vendors to ensure effective requirements are met.

  • Works closely with Database Administrator to minimize database downtime and manage parameters to provide optimal performance of the data warehouse.

  • Works closely with Database Administrator and software vendors utilized to stay abreast of new product features and changes; confers on implementation of software updates including any customization required.

  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots and resolves error messages, aborted jobs, core system and database issues and other processing and connectivity problems

  • Provides advanced on-call technical assistance 24/7 on a variety of issues involving computer software and hardware troubleshooting. Informs management and end users of system-wide issues and resolutions; documents work performed in helpdesk software.

  • Processes sqts, SQL scripts and other procedures in the test environment and provides viable feedback to internal and external Development staff; reports test results; applies approved changes to the production environment.

  • Coordinates and executes Change Management requests to move projects into the production environment

  • Configures, administers, and serves as system custodian to ancillary business systems

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirements

  • Required - 4 Year / Bachelors Degree - Computer Technology or closely related field.

Experience Requirement

  • Required - 4 Years - Responsible data center operations experience, preferably in a distributed environment similar in size, scope and complexity to that of the Credit Union.

  • Preferred - Experience with Oracle, Linux, SQL administration and scripting.

SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Practices, methods and terminology applicable to monitoring and operation of data center hardware and software including standard scheduling, backup and control processes.

  • Applicable hardware and software characteristics, operating environments, commands and structures as they apply to assigned responsibilities.

  • Methods and techniques of troubleshooting to determine causes of computer hardware and software problems and device errors and failures.

  • Effectively apply internal and external customer service practices and processes to meet quality service standards and achieve member satisfaction.

  • Learn and apply information, on a wide range of Credit Union products, services and regulatory compliance requirements, in order to assess member situations and develop solutions.

  • Resolve problems utilizing advanced knowledge and experience.

  • Communicate in a professional manner and deliver information clearly and effectively. Actively listen to questions, opinions and ideas of others. Use tact and diplomacy in sensitive and confidential situations.

  • Use correct English including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

  • Operate computers and use business software and other standard office equipment.

  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Set priorities and manage one's own time effectively.
