TESTING WILL TAKE PLACE ON JUNE 30TH.

Use a percentage scoring system to equally weigh each criterion of the assessment for a total score of 100%:

o Oral board = 33.33%
o Written project = 33.33%
o Tabletop scenario = 33.33%
o TOTAL SCORE = 100%

Establish a minimum passing score of 60% overall

Job Description

PURPOSE SUMMARY. Performs Law Enforcement and investigative duties in support of the Sheriff's Office. May test for and be assigned to specialized certified position of Metro Detective.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES.

This is a safety sensitive position

  • Evaluates requests, complaints and/or allegations to determine case priorities and the types of evidence necessary to proceed with investigations
  • Determines the scope, timing and direction of the investigation while gathering information through interviews, observation, interrogation, contacting informants, and analyzing records to establish facts
  • Processes and oversee crime scenes to obtain evidence to ensure proper processing of evidence such as autopsies, forensic evidence, and fingerprints
  • Explores, exploits, and exhausts all leads to information and evidence to determine the status and/or level of felonious crimes. To include some misdemeanor type crimes directed to investigate
  • Verifies information obtained to establish accuracy and authenticity of facts and evidence
  • Promptly reports critical information to other Detectives, offices and agencies as circumstances warrant to expedite cases
  • Assists other agencies with investigations
  • Prepares clear, logical, impartial, and concise documented reports in the support of required court documents to seize property or apprehend persons
  • Testifies before grand juries and in all required case court proceedings
  • Prepares case files for prosecution for District Attorney's Office and assists the District Attorney's Office in preparing for trial by maintaining contact with all persons involved in the case
  • Conducts follow-up investigations on criminal cases to validate/invalidate statements given by defendant(s)
  • Obtain and share criminal intelligence learned while conducting an investigation with approved members of a law enforcement agency
  • Identify community problems, which can be resolved through proactive measures; implement proactive policing within Dona Ana County; attend community functions to address legal concerns in efforts to enhance community-policing efforts in addition to other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for knowing and abiding by all DASO and DAC policies and procedures.

FOR ASSIGNMENTS IN:

METRO NARCOTICS

  • Perform specialized and technical tasks in support of the Sheriff's Office in plainclothes criminal interdiction.
  • Respond to callouts to assist other agencies with the investigation of violations of the controlled substances act.
  • Investigate felony level violations of state and federal laws concerning narcotics, dangerous drugs, or other controlled substances.
  • Make arrests, participate in undercover operations, raids, and surveillance of persons or targeted locations where it is believed the law is being violated.
  • Conducts undercover drug buys from drug traffickers and submits for lab analysis all drug evidence obtained through undercover operations

ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS.

A. Education. High School Diploma or equivalent.

B. Experience. Minimum of three (3) years total as a certified law enforcement officer

C. Education/Experience substitution. None

D. Licenses/Certifications. Must have a valid driver's license and must maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with County policy. Must have a current New Mexico Law Enforcement Certification

E. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver's license record, etc.). Testing requirements for lateral assignment will comply with the current collective bargaining agreement.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION :

Must have knowledge of: Principles, methods and techniques of law enforcement; laws, methods and procedures of criminal investigation; rules, regulations and standard operating procedures of the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office; Doña Ana County geography; Criminal law and criminal procedure in regard to apprehension, arrest and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies; Basic computer skills; Basic mathematics; Report writing; Court demeanor and protocol; Training techniques; and Effective communication and listening techniques.

Must have skills in: Effective communication; analyzing crime scenes and developing investigative strategies; report writing; use of firearms and law enforcement equipment; establishing and maintaining working relationships; and interviewing and interrogation techniques.

Must have ability to: Maintain neutrality during an investigation and subsequent report writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Compensation Range
$30.95 - $39.00
