Medtronic is looking for a Principal Systems Engineer to join the Systems Engineering Team within the Surgical Operation Unit. Responsible for both leading and contributing to investigations and identifying root cause of issues associated with the Medtronic Surgical stapling family of products, the successful candidate will work with a cross functional team to support activities associated with a living platform set of products. This includes coordinating between Released Product Engineering, manufacturing, and hardware and software engineering functions to identify impacts and lead change and improvement workstreams. Daily activities also include performing impact assessments, evaluating and updating requirements, and documenting system and subsystem architectures. She or he will own the planning, execution, and documentation of sustaining-supporting systems activities. In this role, she or he will be a critical member of projects in a visible and fast-paced role.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Understand, evaluate, and communicate system performance, desired behavior, and usability in the context of clinical use.
  • Investigate internally and externally reported issues to determine root cause and propose process or technical resolution.
  • Lead and contribute to Corrective and Preventative Action (CAPA) and field Issue Investigation processes.
  • Participate in Roadmap discussions, evaluation of feature enhancements, and prioritization of fixes and enhancements for the product lines.
  • Evaluate functional and performance impact of proposed design changes related to enhancements, cost-down, and component end-of-life issues and others.
  • Perform customer, system and subsystem requirement impact assessments, changes, review, and reconciliation.
  • Work with engineers to develop an understanding of the technological underpinnings of system architecture and detailed design.
  • Employ Model Based Systems Engineering concepts to document and communicate system design changes.
  • Oversee, and be deeply acquainted with, regulated development processes and standards for risk management, usability, and safety to ensure systems design changes and documentation meet relevant safety and regulatory standards.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to junior engineers.
  • Track and communicate status of deliverables.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 7+ years of engineering experience, or advanced degree with 5+ years of engineering experience.

Nice to Have

  • Expert knowledge of Systems Engineering principles and best practices.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience developing complex electromechanical medical devices.
  • Prior experience in product sustaining activities supporting complex launched product updates and enhancements.
  • Expert understanding of design controls and good documentation practices.
  • Demonstrated cross functional leadership experience.
  • Experience in requirements management, risk management, change management, and system architecture documentation.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$128,000.00 - $192,000.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance , Health Savings Account , Healthcare Flexible Spending Account , Life insurance, Long-term disability leave , Dependent daycare spending account , Tuition assistance/reimbursement , and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
