WUSF public media is a leading source of news, information, and cultural enrichment for West Central Florida. We reach over one million people monthly through our NPR news station WUSF 89.7, Classical WSMR 89.1 & 103.9, and an extensive digital presence including live streaming, podcasts, newsletters, and social media. As a department of the University of South Florida, we have a dedicated team of 90 professionals and a budget of $11 million. We are deeply committed to our community, providing valuable internships to students and delivering content that informs, inspires, and connects. Our main studios are on the USF Tampa campus, with additional broadcast and production facilities on the USFSM and USFSP campuses.

Position Summary
This full-time editor will oversee the editorial vision of a state government journalism project to serve digital, broadcast, and social media audiences and distributed by collaborative newsrooms across Florida. She/He will supervise a Tallahassee reporter and audience engagement reporter and will have the ability to oversee daily coverage and large reporting initiative, and successfully direct, guide, and mentor these journalists. This person will have a passion for collaboration and exceptional journalism skills including news judgment, reporting, writing, and editing on multiple platforms. They will keep on eye on state government reporting at partner outlets to avoid duplication and to elevate the quality of what this project produces. The editor will lead regular editorial meetings and prioritize goals and coordinate short- and long-term government coverage from the team and media partners. Occasional reporting is possible. This person will maintain communications with other WUSF departments and WUSF news partners. This position will be based in Tampa.Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Broadcasting or Communications and three to five years of experience related to Journalism, Communications and/or Public Broadcasting; or a Master's degree in the fields listed above and two years of experience related to Journalism, Communications and/or Public Broadcasting.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience reporting on state government, knowledge of data and analytics will be an advantage. Video, radio, digital and public media experience are a plus. This person must have an active driver's license and be able to drive to and from assignments, and be able to travel occasionally to locations across the state. This is an essential personnel position.

  • Lead the Tallahassee reporter, audience engagement reporter and freelancers in the aggressive coverage of spot and enterprise state government news.
  • Produce enterprise and spot news coverage of state government stories with a focus on health care. Continue participating in the NPR/KFF News collaboration, pitching and producing enterprise stories from Florida for a national audience. Produce regular, engaging short-form videos, audio and digital stories.
  • Collaborate with media partners at newsrooms across Florida, leading regular editorial meetings. Coordinate on short- and long-term government coverage.
  • Appear on Florida public media programs and podcasts to help amplify the voices of Floridians and state government issues important to them.
  • Assist in breaking news that impacts the state of Florida.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
