Sr. Academic Advisor I (Finance)



A Sr. Academic Advisor I develops and oversees advising functions, applies specialized knowledge of academic and career fields to advising practice, trains other Academic Advisors and support staff in practices and procedures, and may serve on college or university advising policy committees. A Sr. Academic Advisor I does not directly supervise other Advisors, and does perform actual advising duties a significant portion of the time.

Nature of Work: This position reports to a Chair, Assistant Dean, Director, or other administrator of a central advising office. This is an advanced professional advising position supporting an academic department, college, or campus-wide advising office. The position oversees advising functions, applies specialized knowledge of academic and career fields to advising practice, trains other Academic Advisors and support staff in practices and procedures, and serves on college or university advising policy committees. This position also performs direct advising duties requiring considerable contact with students through individual interviews, and group meetings and workshops. Sr. Academic Advisor I's are expected to possess extensive knowledge about academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services within the scope of their responsibilities. This position is distinguished for an Academic Advisor II through its involvement in administration of an advising program, which involves training staff, acting as a consultant or direct advisor in more specialized cases, and serving on advising related committees.This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities and six years of academic advising experience; or a Master's degree in those same fields with a minimum of five years of academic advising experience within higher education. Work experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's degree requirement for this position.

A public employer may include a postsecondary degree as a baseline requirement only as an alternative to the number of years of direct experience required, not to exceed:

(a) Two years of direct experience for an associate degree;

(b) Four years of direct experience for a bachelor's degree;

(c) Six years of direct experience for a master's degree;

(d) Seven years of direct experience for a professional degree; or

(e) Nine years of direct experience for a doctoral degree

•Evaluates complex educational plans and develops options so that a degree may be attained in the 4-6 year timeframe.

•Serves as leader/trainer for other staff and advisors regarding advising programs and policies.

•May train others in the use of student record systems and degree audit systems.

•Coordinates a special program such as peer advising, career placement, internships or college honors program.

•Provides information and statistical data on behalf of a college, such as detailed enrollment statistics on the special program; analyzes data and writes reports as requested.

•May coordinate the design and execution of an orientation program.

•Collaborates with other units such as the Career Center and Registrar's Office on campus and refers students when appropriate.

•Assists students with identification of long term goals and career plans.

•Works to position students to meet requirements for graduation within appropriate periods of time while preparing them to meet future goals.

•Serves as the chief advisor for a particular academic field or professional preparation.

•Maintains advising records and confidential student evaluation records.

•May be responsible for overall recordkeeping and reporting for an advising unit.

•Utilizes and provides consultation to others on USF information systems to support delivery of advising services.

•Serves on appropriate department, college and/or campus advisory committees.

•Performs related duties as required or deemed necessary to meet the Academic Advising goals within the Advisor's scope of responsibility. Apply
