The Cook is responsible for managing and operating the kitchen in the absence of the Dietary Supervisor, ensuring that high-quality meals are prepared and served in accordance with established menus, portion control guidelines, and dietary requirements. This role plays a key part in maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen while working collaboratively with staff to meet the nutritional needs of residents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the kitchen and cooking area in a safe, orderly, and sanitary manner.
  • Prepare and cook a variety of foods in large quantities while ensuring meals are tasteful and appealing.
  • Follow prepared menus and portion control guidelines.
  • Accurately prepare special diets as needed.
  • Record food temperatures for each meal.
  • Prepare pureed foods as required.
  • Work cooperatively and harmoniously with personnel across all departments.
  • Ensure quaternary solution levels are maintained in sanitizer buckets.
  • Assist in serving meals efficiently and courteously.
  • Clean the cooking area, serving carts, and ensure all cleaning schedules are followed.
  • Report resident care concerns and potential issues to the Administrator and/or Director of Nursing.
  • Participate in the orientation and ongoing training of dietary staff.
  • Ensure the presentation of food is visually appealing for residents.
  • Exhibit strong teamwork and willingness to work under supervision.
  • Supervise dietary staff in the absence of the Dietary Supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a cook in a hospital or long-term care facility
  • Must obtain a Food Handlers Card
  • Experience as a Line Cook, Prep Cook, or Dietary Team Member preferred
  • Strong knowledge of nutrition and dietary restrictions
  • Ability to adapt meals for special dietary needs
  • Understanding of food safety protocols and sanitation practices
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Dependability to work scheduled shifts
