About the Role
Position: Equipment/Electrical Distribution System (EDS) Operator
Location: Manhattan, Kansas
Employment Type: Full-Time

As an EDS Operator with LB&B Associates, Inc., youll play a vital role in the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of our electrical distribution infrastructure. Youll work side-by-side with experienced engineers, skilled-trades, and fellow technicians to ensure our systems deliver reliable power to the community while meeting or exceeding stringent regulatory standards.
What Youll Do
Every shift brings new challenges, diverse technical tasks, and opportunities to grow. Your key responsibilities will include:
Operate, monitor, and maintain all aspects of the electrical distribution system, including substations, switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, protective relays, and associated infrastructure.
Monitor system performance and power quality using advanced SCADA, EMS, and computerized control panels, responding swiftly to alarms and abnormal conditions.
Perform routine and preventive maintenance on electrical and mechanical systems to maximize uptime, ensure safe operation, and minimize unplanned outages or disruptions.
Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, power interruptions, faults, or system anomalies, implementing effective solutions while maintaining regulatory compliance and operational reliability.
Coordinate system switching, isolations, and clearances for maintenance or emergency work, collaborating closely with field crews and following detailed safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
Collect and interpret electrical dataincluding system loads, voltages, current, power factor, and equipment statusto guide real-time operational decisions, optimize system performance, and support regulatory compliance.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of all operations, maintenance activities, switching logs, outage reports, and incident responses per company policy and regulatory requirements.
Collaborate closely with team members, engineers, utility partners, and management to maximize system reliability, share technical expertise, and resolve operational challenges.
Conduct regular inspections and rounds of all substations, feeder circuits, and control roomschecking equipment, monitoring environmental conditions, and verifying system readiness.
Participate in safety meetings, emergency exercises, and ongoing technical training to stay up-to-date on best practices, new technology, and evolving industry standards.
Assist with inventory management of critical spares, tools, and safety gear to support continuous and safe system operation.
Respond professionally and efficiently to emergencies, outages, or abnormal system events, prioritizing safety, communication, and rapid restoration of service.
Adhere at all times to company safety protocols, use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and all relevant electrical codes and environmental regulationsyour vigilance ensures community safety and operational integrity.
Deliver friendly, professional customer service to utility partners, regulatory agencies, and the public, proudly representing LB&B Associates, Inc. in every interaction.
What Were Looking For
Do you bring a strong work ethic, technical skillset, and a passion for operational excellence? Were searching for candidates who offer:
Required: Valid state certification as an Electrician, Electrical Operator, or Power Distribution Operator (Class I, II, III, or IV preferred, depending on facility needs).
Required: Minimum 3 years of experience operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting complex electrical distribution systems, substations, or similar utility infrastructure.
Deep understanding of electrical system operation (generation, transmission, distribution), regulatory requirements (EPA, OSHA, NESC, NEC), and industry best practices in system safety and reliability.
Proficient with high-voltage and medium-voltage switchgear, protective relays, SCADA/EMS, transformers, and circuit breakers.
Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to methodically resolve complex system or equipment issuesoften independently, under pressure, and with minimal supervision.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and system one-line diagrams.
Excellent communication skillsable to clearly document events, share technical information, and collaborate with teammates, supervisors, and external partners.
Proficiency with basic computer applications for reporting, data entry, and recordkeeping.
Attention to detail, organizational excellence, and an unwavering commitment to safety, environmental compliance, and operational discipline in every action.
Physical ability to work in substation and control room environmentsstanding, walking, climbing ladders, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in confined spaces or at heights as operations demand.
Flexibility to work variable shifts (days, nights, weekends, holidays) and respond to emergency call-ins as system needs require.

Physical Demands
Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as required.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and reaching throughout each shift.
Manual dexterity for operating, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment, switchgear, and control systems.
Exposure to noise, heat, cold, high-voltage hazards, heights, confined spaces, and weather conditionswith full PPE provided.
