Job Title: Top Level Assembly (Mechanical) Technician
Job Location: Rapid City, SD

Position Summary:

We are seeking a detail-oriented [TLAM] Top-Level Assembly (Mechanical) Operator to assemble and prepare precision mechanical and electronic components. Many tasks require working under a microscope and demand a high level of craftsmanship, manual dexterity & manual steadiness. This role requires adherence to engineering specifications, quality standards, and manufacturing documentation to ensure consistent, high-quality product assembly.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assemble top-level mechanical/electronic components into sub-assemblies or final products, following manufacturing documentation such as travelers, drawings, and work instructions.
  • Perform firmware loading from computer files and conduct functional testing on devices, components, and cable assemblies.
  • Carry out in-process inspections to ensure compliance with engineering and quality standards.
  • Disassemble, modify, rework, reassemble, and test both production and prototype units as required.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Maintain clear and professional written and verbal communication.

Daily Duties Include:

  • Interpret and follow manufacturing drawings, travelers, and work instructions.
  • Assemble components in compliance with IPC standards.
  • Assemble mechanical hardware, wiring harnesses, and electrical connectors.
  • Perform detailed soldering operations and microscope-based assembly tasks.
  • Complete the required production and quality documentation accurately with proper organization.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts and uphold key metrics: Safety, Quality, Productivity, and Schedule.
  • Switch tasks and priorities flexibly in a dynamic production environment.
  • Work overtime as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Frequent work under a microscope with small parts.
  • Sitting for extended periods.
  • Use of ESD-safe practices and cleanroom protocols as applicable.
  • Maintain and follow designated work area organization.
  • Occasional lifting of light to moderately heavy items.

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Strong manual dexterity and steady hand-eye coordination.

  • Sharp attention to detail with a commitment to producing high-quality work.

  • Familiarity with IPC standards preferred but not required:

  • --IPC-A-610: Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies

  • --J-STD-001: Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies

  • --IPC-A-WHMA-620: Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies

  • Ability to operate various hand tools, microscopes, and test equipment.

  • Proficiency in reading electronic work instructions and engineering documentation.

  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word).

  • Capable of working independently and managing time effectively.

  • Capable of following and fulfilling tasks given by area supervisor.

  • Willingness to follow and perform repetitive tasks.

  • Strong communication skills in spoken and written English.

  • Positive, respectful, and collaborative attitude.

  • Flexible, safety-conscious, and able to adapt in a fast-paced environment.
