INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY
1. Administers a complex center or multiple departments.
2. Manages budget and engages in strategic planning to ensure all goals are met.
3. Hires and directs the activities of staff.
4. Resolves personnel issues as they arise.
5. Engages in budget-planning, grant oversight, and policy development.
6. Implements new programs and projects and monitors ongoing activities of department or center.
7. Reviews department policies and processes and implements improvements as needed.
8. Represents department or center to internal and external constituents.

Job Duties:
Student Relations
§ Advise undergraduate students on courses and career opportunities
§ Manage Peer Assistant for New Student Orientations for freshmen and transfer students
§ Prepare and attend New Student Orientations for freshmen and transfer students in fall and spring with Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies
§ Coordinate undergraduate student inductees for Pi Alpha Alpha honor society and organize ceremony
§ Interact with undergraduate students and alumni on LinkedIn and other social media
§ Support activities of Hobby School undergraduate student organizations, such as the Hobby School Student Organization
§ Organize the Garnet Coleman Award for Student Excellence
§ Represent the Hobby School at Cougar First Impressions activities
§ Distribute information about university events and lectures via student listserv
Administration
§ Serve as liaison with Office of Admissions, Office of the University Registrar and other administrative offices, including working with the Undergraduate Advising Committee, New Student Program and Undergraduate Recruitment Board meetings
§ Create undergraduate courses and other academic proposals with Undergraduate Committee in Curriculog and SharePoint
§ Organize online undergraduate course evaluations
§ Submit undergraduate student-related general petitions to Office of the University Registrar
§ Support faculty with undergraduate courses, including schedules and syllabi in People Soft
§ Review and submit revisions for Undergraduate Catalog
§ Review and approve or disapprove undergraduate student applications to graduate
§ Maintain communication with Academic Advisors and other staff across campus
§ Coordinate with Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies to create the Academic Program Assessment Report (APAR) for BA/BS Public Policy and to review possible undergraduate program changes
Recruitment & Promotion
§ Work with Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies to recruit students through class presentations, campus activities and external events
§ Assist communications team with creation of promotional materials
§ Use UH CMS to update undergraduate program web pages
Student Relations
§ Advise MPP and MPA students on courses and career opportunities
§ Prepare and participate in the Hobby School Graduate Programs Orientation for fall and spring with Associate Dean for Graduate Studies
§ Coordinate the UH Career Services for Hobby School-sponsored career fair
§ Identify and assign current graduate students as Hobby School Mentors for new graduate students
§ Coordinate graduate student inductees for Pi Alpha Alpha honor society and organize ceremony
§ Organize the Garnet Coleman Award for Student Excellence given to an outstanding graduate student each year
§ Assist with the Hobby School Graduate Student Advisory Council
§ Interact with graduate students and alumni on LinkedIn and other social media
§ Distribute information about university events and lectures via student listserv
Administration
• Use Navigate and PeopleSoft to manage graduate students
• Create graduate courses and other academic proposals with Graduate & Professional Studies Committee in Curriculog and SharePoint
• Support faculty to create and edit graduate course schedule in PeopleSoft
• Work with Hobby School Curriculum Committee to review possible graduate program changes
• Organize online graduate course evaluations
• Submit graduate student-related general petitions to Graduate School and Office of the University Registrar
• Review and submit revisions for Graduate Catalog
• Review and approve or disapprove graduate student applications to graduate
• Serve as liaison with Office of Admissions, Office of the University Registrar, Graduate School and other university administration offices
• Maintain communication with Academic Advisors and other staff across campus
• Coordinate with Hobby School Admissions Committee to review and make decisions for graduate students and enter decisions in CollegeNET/ApplyWeb
• Work with the Hobby School Scholarship Committee for graduate programs and business team to award scholarships
• Coordinate with Associate Dean for Graduate Studies to create the Academic Program Assessment Reports (APAR) for MPA and MPP
• Assist with MPA and MPP accreditation process
Recruitment
§ Work with Associate Dean for Graduate Studies on graduate recruitment efforts
§ Attend graduate student recruiting events on-campus, off-campus and online (including the UH Graduate School Fair and events at Texas Southern University, UH-Clear Lake, UH-Downtown and the University of St. Thomas)
§ Assist communications team with promotional materials
§ Use UH CMS to update graduate program web pages
Additional Hobby School Job Duties
§ Lead the Hobby School's graduation ceremony administration, including working with the Office of Protocol and Special Events
§ Serve as liaison with the Hobby School of Public Affairs Alumni Association
§ Assist Associate Deans with supervision of graduate assistants, research assistants and teaching assistants
§ Maintain Hobby School membership for the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA) and the Texas Municipal League
§ Maintain individual membership in professional development organizations, such as the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and Texas Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals (TxGAP)
§ Manage HOBBY-ALUMNI, HOBBY-ALL-STUDENTS, HOBBY-UNDERGRAD and HOBBY-GRAD listservs
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters Degree
Teaching Experience
MQ: Education: Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Experience: Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of directly job-related experience. Certification/Licensing: None.
