Summary

The Field Service Technician (FST) is responsible for the installation, commissioning, and scheduled and emergency service of products serviced by Fairbanks Morse Defense, in accordance with appropriate certification. Products may include diesel engines, electrical controls, roll-up doors, cranes, elevators, and davits. The FST is expected to establish and maintain excellent rapport with all customers, co-workers, and sales representatives while ensuring continuous communication with region offices and direct management.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Role

  • Rely on experience and judgment to plan and achieve goals.
  • Diagnose problems and develop solutions for qualified products.
  • Work independently on qualified products and assist with shop duties as needed (general machining, part inspections, assembly, testing, and warehouse tasks).

Technical
  • Meet qualifications for providing technical representative support services.
  • Stay current on Engineering Change Orders, Field Service Change Notices, and Service Information Letters.
  • Maintain service manuals with the latest revisions.
  • Document work performed on Service Reports and write Condition Found Reports.

Administration
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting (timecards, expense reports, project closure, etc.).
  • Maintain certification based on internal Service Progression Requirements.
  • Provide estimated time of arrival to customers when applicable.
  • Maintain company property (vehicle, credit cards, PPE, test equipment, laptop, etc.) in accordance with company policies.

Performance
  • Maximize productivity by identifying and combining service opportunities.
  • Complete all work efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain productive utilization rates according to company guidelines.
  • Adhere to company dress code and safety regulations.
  • Understand and comply with company escalation processes and procedures.
  • Act as a role model for field service technician associates, demonstrating professionalism and commitment to service delivery.
  • Manage stressful situations with diplomacy.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required; and at least one of the following:
    • Associate degree in a technical discipline with four years of military or relevant industry experience in similar product lines, or
    • Six years of military or relevant industry experience in similar product lines.

Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of diesel and spark gas engine test equipment and theory preferred.
  • Basic understanding of gas compression and associated hazards preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret product line diagrams and blueprints.
  • Foundation in pneumatic and/or hydraulic systems, PLC, and electronic controls preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational and planning skills, with the ability to manage stressful situations diplomatically.
  • Proficiency in English and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Valid driver's license and qualification for company credit card required.

Travel
  • Travel required up to 75% (domestic and international), including weekends, evenings, and holidays, with emergency travel on short notice.

Security Requirements
  • This position requires access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information, which is not releasable to foreign nationals. Proof of U.S. citizenship is required.

Physical Requirements

The FST must be able to:

  • Stand, walk, use hands and fingers, and handle objects or tools.
  • Reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Talk, hear, and smell.
  • Sit and climb or balance.
  • Lift at least 35 pounds regularly.
  • Maintain specific vision abilities, including close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
