About the Role

The role of the EHS Leader is expected to provide leadership to the plant in safety and environmental concerns. Ensure safety and environmental compliance of the plant. Coordinate plant medical programs. Coordinate plant fire prevention programs. Ensure the management and continuous improvement of EHS Management systems related to ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 13485. Ensure effective implementation and management of HMEX safety enablers. Serve as the plant insurance representative and ensure Safety budget is met.

The ideal candidate should be able to commute to Bowling Green, KY.  

Duties/Responsibilities:

Plant Safety Compliance

  • Role model for safety
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA standards and all local legal requirements are completed accurately and on time.
  • Develop and implement plant safety policies and ensure they are followed.
  • Ensure safety training is provided to all plant employees.
  • Coordinate incident / accident investigations and assure corrective action to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Perform safety auditing of plant equipment.
  • Manage chemical approval and SDS systems.
  • Maintain OSHA injury and illness record keeping.
  • Manage industrial hygiene monitoring.
  • Coordinate plant emergency response.
  • Coordinate and Manage Proactive Safety Processes such as Safety Index
  • Ensure timely and effective implementation of HMEX safety enablers
  • Communicates the Safety CBN and objectives to the plant
  • Shows intellectual curiosity and willingness to develop & actively participate in department DOMs
  • Coaching on the job: MSRA/JSA-BOS-IHBE
  • Leads working sessions on MSRA, Isolation of Hazardous Energy and ladders-steps-stairs
  • Ensure development, execution, and continuous improvement of the sites EHSMS ISO 45001 management system

Plant Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with EPA standards.
  • Comply with the requirements of the plant sewer use ordinance for water discharge.
  • Develop and provide training on required environmental programs
  • Coordinate plant special, hazardous waste disposal and waste oil recycling programs.
  • Ensure compliance with air permitting regulations.
  • Perform SARA Title III reporting to local and state emergency response committees.
  • Ensure development, execution, and continuous improvement of the ISO 14001 management system
  • Develop, organize, and execute internal and external community out-reach programs that are aligned with Essity sustainability goals
  • Develop the sites Zero Landfill strategy and execution Plant Medical Programs
  • Knowledge of EPA standards
  • Support to resolve non-conformities related to environment & continuously improve the effectiveness of the guidelines for the Site
  • Implementation of the Essity Sustainability program in the Site
  • Basic general experience with environmental permitting.
  • Knowledge of Hazardous Waste Management regulations, KPDES Wastewater / Stormwater requirements

Plant Medical Programs

  • Develop, organize, and execute internal and external community out-reach programs that are aligned with Essity safety goals
  • Emergency Medical Technician or First Responder Certification preferred. Will conduct First Responder training
  • Provide guidelines for emergency medical care of injured and ill employees.
  • Manage training program for Medical Technicians.
  • Assist Human resources, Business Unit Leaders, Process Engineers, and Dept Leaders  in modified work issues
  • Maintain first aid and medical supplies.
  • Manage employee medical surveillance programs.(Hearing Tests.
  • Coordinate wellness activities (Flu shots, plant physicals, etc)
  • Monitor new-hire physicals for compliance with internal physical job requirements

Plant Fire Prevention

  • Coordinate fire extinguisher inspection and training  for the plant.
  • Ensure appropriate training on the plant fire alarm and sprinkler system.
  • Manage fire prevention programs and training
  • Ensure emergency fire response and training
  • Ensure fire detection and suppression system readiness.
  • Assist in the process of site loss prevention audits 

Plant Safety Development

  • Provide support to the QRESH reps and ensure that they fulfil their role-related responsibilities.
  • Continuously improve capabilities and training for plant personnel.
  • Continue to develop an environment where safety issues get addressed and resolved.
  • Coordinate and improve the plant Inspection, Risk Assessment, and Behavior Based Safety programs and ensure that identified issues are addressed and resolved.

Plant Leadership

  • Lead the plant in the development of the long-term safety strategy and implementation of same.
  • Increase safety knowledge of plant through safety education programs.
  • Provide updates on safety and environmental performance.
  • Organize safety incentive and award programs.

Plant Insurance Representative

  • Serve as secondary liaison with insurance providers on Worker's Compensation issues.
  • A good working knowledge of the state Worker's Compensation laws

Corporate Safety and Environmental Contact

  • Represent Bowling Green plant at global corporate safety and environmental conferences.  
  • Report plant injury records and environmental waste numbers

Budget Management

  • Ensure that the safety budget is met.

ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 Management Program

  • Lead the development of and continuous improvement of the plant EHS Management Systems
  • Work cooperatively with QRESH Dept, QRESH Reps, and CFT to further develop EHSMS.
  • Ensure certification readiness and effectiveness for the site
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001, ISO 13485,  and ISO 45001 standards

Education & Experience:

EDUCATION

  • B.S. degree required. Safety, environmental, or related field preferred
  • 3 – 5 years' experience with safety programs in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to understand and apply various regulatory requirements as they apply to the site operations
  • Ability to work with compliance agencies

TRAVEL

  • Ability to travel 20% percentage of time to domestic and international locations
