Senior Software Engineer - Walkersville, MD (Biotech)

Lonza is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Software Engineer to join our innovative team supporting life sciences technologies that make a significant impact around the world. In this role, you will play a key part in designing, developing, and implementing software solutions that drive critical business and scientific outcomes. You'll collaborate closely with multi-functional teams and senior collaborators to translate complex requirements into elegant technical solutions, all while helping to shape the direction of our software platforms. This is a hybrid position based out of our Walkersville, MD location, requiring onsite presence three days per week. It's a great opportunity for a software engineer who thrives in a collaborative, purposeful environment and is passionate about delivering high-quality, scalable systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with senior collaborators to understand business goals and translate them into clear technical requirements.

  • Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of applications that meet both functional and performance needs.

  • Architect and implement scalable, efficient, and maintainable code using technologies such as C#, .NET, Blazor, WPF, ASP.NET, JavaScript, REST APIs, and SQL Server.

  • Apply Visual Studio 2022 and modern development tools to build interactive, user-friendly GUIs and real-time data acquisition/control systems.

  • Implement and handle serial port communication and data transfer processes within software applications.

  • Plan, document, and maintain technical specifications, ensuring alignment with project and business objectives.

  • Lead and support the software development lifecycle, applying Agile or Scrum methodologies to drive iterative delivery.

  • Conduct detailed code reviews, offer feedback, and ensure coding standards are met.

  • Mentor and guide junior developers, fostering knowledge-sharing and continuous technical growth within the team.

  • Enforce software quality standards through rigorous testing, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other departments to ensure solutions are aligned with broader organizational goals.

  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation and technical excellence.

  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to both internal teams and external partners.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support project and organizational growth.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in software development using Microsoft technologies such as C# and .NET.

  • At least 1 year of experience working in multi-tier, distributed enterprise architecture environments.

  • Solid understanding of software development principles including object-oriented programming, database design, security, and networking.

  • Proficiency in front-end and back-end technologies such as Blazor, JavaScript, WPF, ASP.NET, and Vue.js.

  • Solid experience working with SQL Server and RESTful APIs.

  • Familiarity with Agile or Scrum development methodologies.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to write clean, scalable, and testable code.

  • Capable of working both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

We recognize that attracting, developing and retaining the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company.  As a result, we aim for flexibility in structuring competitive compensation offers to ensure that we are able to attract the best candidates.  As required by law in this state, the quoted salary range for this hybrid position is $93,000.00 – $149,000.00. We use broad salary ranges that reflect the competitive market for similar jobs, provide sufficient opportunity for growth as you gain experience and expand responsibilities; while also allowing for differentiation on performance based on the breadth of our ranges, most new hires will start at the company between the lower and the middle part of the applicable range. We tailor our offers within the range based on job-related factors, including organizational needs, internal equity, market data, geographic area and the selected candidate's experience, education, industry knowledge, location, technical and/or communication skills and other factors that may prove relevant during the selection process. This range is only inclusive of base salary, and base pay is just one component of Lonza's total compensation package for employees. Full-time employees are eligible to receive a performance-related bonus, as well as a comprehensive benefits package including medical and dental coverage, 401k plan, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, an employee assistance program, paid time off (PTO), and more.
