TechOps SME / L3 Engineer

Orlando, FL (Hybrid)

Position Summary

Thales is looking for a TechOps SME / L3 Engineer to be responsible for all documentation, training, system upkeep, and new monitoring solutions transitioned to the Technical Operations (TechOps), formerly Network Operations (NOC), team. You will act as an escalation tier for incidents raised by other TechOps Engineers and is a subject matter expert on monitoring ground infrastructure and aircraft level events.

In this position, you will also be responsible for making sure all system documentation is constantly reviewed and updated and the TechOps team receives the proper training on new and legacy systems. As the SME, you are responsible for working with DevOps and the integration team, and develop a plan to transition responsibilities to the TechOps team smoothly as well as act as an after-hours escalation point for all technical issues that cannot be resolved by other TechOps engineers.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Network, Windows and Linux Server, and web-based application Monitoring, Maintenance and Support.
  • Identify, document and troubleshoot network, systems, applications and cloud issues to resolution; Build customized reports as needed by the business; Generate and maintain technical documentation to support the development and/or improvement of Operational and Monitoring procedures and platform application/system testing.
  • Build training material for new and existing employees on all existing and new tools that the TechOps team must utilize; Works with integrations and DevOps team to make sure all new tools are documented and training is provided to TechOps staff.
  • Document new and existing tools that are needed to monitor ground system and aircraft level events; Provide a high level of technical expertise to ensure the development of network technologies that aid in the achievement of organizational goals.
  • Assists in knowledgebase management; Evaluate and refine documentation making sure it is always up to date; Performing assigned daily, weekly and monthly operations maintenance duties; Ensure that all critical monitoring applications and tools always up to date; Act as subject matter expert for existing and new applications.
  • Participate in on call rotation 24x7; Be available to work after hours and weekends as needed; Follows prescribed processes for Incident, Change and Problem management; Mentor and act as a leader for other TechOps technicians; Other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems or similar technical field with a minimum of 5 years of experience of Network infrastructure, Microsoft Windows and Linux Systems and Servers (Windows Server 2012, 2008, 2003, Windows 8/7/XP, RedHat) or High School Diploma/GED and 10 years of Network infrastructure, Microsoft Windows and Linux Systems and Servers (Windows Server 2012, 2008, 2003, Windows 8/7/XP, RedHat).
  • Three (3) years' experience in Network and Systems monitoring; One (1) Year Experience in monitoring a 24X7 environment; One (1) Year Experience in systems monitoring and long term trending of SLA, performance and sizing metrics related to reporting.
  • Experience developing, documenting and maintaining installation and configuration procedures; Experience training and developing personnel.
  • Must be available to participate in on-call rotation.
  • Excellent documentation, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; Excellent customer service skills.

Special Position Requirements

  • Schedule: Must be available to participate in 24x7 on-call rotation. May need to assist with 24x7 shift coverage on occasion (less than 10% of the time). Irregular work hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required to complete specific projects or as needed by the business. Expected shift is from 8AM to 5:30PM Sunday through Thursday, though future coverage needs might entail changes to the days of the week worked.
  • Physical Environment: Typical office environment.
  • Physical Demands: May need to lift equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. on occasion (less than 10% of the time).
  • Travel: Approximately 0% to 10% domestic travel annually, mostly to Melbourne FL and Irvine CA, reimbursable by Thales. If worked as a fully-remote position, visits to Orlando to review projects and conduct workshops and check-ins at employees' own expense will occur approximately quarterly.
  • Customer Location Based or Site Visits: No customer location / customer visitation is expected. The option to attend visits to customer and vendor sites to provide expertise may be occasionally offered, as business travel reimbursed by Thales.
  • Personal or Company/Pool Vehicle Usage: Personal vehicle is required, except for business-authorized travel where taxi/Uber or Rental vehicle may be reimbursed as an expense.
