  • Minimum Required: High School Diploma or GED
  • Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • No prior experience required. Previous healthcare or patient care experience is a plus.
  • *** Required to obtain registration by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologies (BRPT) as a Registered
    Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and/or by the American Board of Sleep Medicine as a Registered Sleep
    Technologist (RST) within 12 months of start date. This includes completing two weeks of modules along with the 960
    clinical hours to be eligible to become registered.

UC Health is an EEO employer.The Polysomnographer Trainee is an entry-level position responsible for learning and assisting with the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic sleep studies under the direct supervision of a Registered Polysomnographer (RPSGT) or qualified supervisor. The trainee will acquire the foundational skills necessary to conduct sleep studies and provide quality patient care in accordance with AASM and facility standards.

  • Engages in population appropriate communication.
  • Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
  • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
  • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  • Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
  • Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or
    those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or
    operates equipment safely.
  • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Learning to obtain an artifact free polysomnographic recording under direct supervision of the
    registered Polysomnographer
  • Learns how to maintain patient confidentiality and provide a safe and comfortable testing environment.
  • Learns proper hook-up procedures according to established protocols (10-20 system of electrode
    placement) under direct supervision of the registered Polysomnographer.
  • Learns, observes, and assists in monitoring sleep recordings and physiological data during sleep studies.
  • Learns how to score sleep studies in accordance with AASM guidelines under registered
    Polysomnographer guidance.
  • Learns how to perform overnight polysomnography (PSG), Mulitple sleep latency test, and home sleep
    apnea testing (HSAT) on patients to learn how monitor and record physiological data during sleep.
  • Learns how to perform an accurate hookup according to the International 10/20 system
  • Learns and observe how to prepare patients for sleep studies by explaining procedures, attaching
    sensors and electrodes, and ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the process.
  • Learns how to continuously monitor patients' sleep patterns, vital signs, and responses to
    interventions during the sleep study, making real-time adjustments as necessary under the direct
    supervision of the registered polysomnographer.
  • Learns how to accurately identify, record, and document data, including EEG, EKG, EOG, EMG, and
    respiratory parameters, to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders
  • Learns the relevant regulations and standards, such as those established by the American Academy of
    Sleep Medicine (AASM) to ensure that sleep studies are in adherence.
  • Learns how to properly maintain ongoing communication with patients overnight to monitor their
    progress, provide support, and address any concerns or issues related to sleep therapy.
  • Learns how to provide set up & patient instruction for Home Study Testing (HSAT) equipment.
  • Learns how to provide mask fittings and pressure setting changes as needed.
  • Learns how to score sleep studies in accordance with AASM guidelines under technologist guidance.
  • Learns how to recognize different sleep stages and sleep-related events and document their fidnings in
    the EMR under direct supervision of the registered Polysomnographer.
  • Learns to document significant events and patient behaviors during testing in the EMR under the direct
    supervision of the registered Polysomnographer.
  • Maintain accurate and organized patient records, including study documentation, consent forms, and
    patient history.
  • Learns how to compile a report that summarizes the events of the night
  • Will be trained on how to compile hourly charting that accurately reports the events of the night each
    hour
  • Learns to educate patients about sleep disorders, treatment options, and the use of prescribed devices,
    such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, and non-invasive ventilation (NIV).
  • Learns how to maintain equipment and ensures proper function prior to each study.
  • Becomes responsible for troubleshooting and correcting equipment problems as needed on night shift via hands on training.
