Prudential CIO: Senior Associate – Japan Operations Portfolio Management (GPM)

Global Portfolio Management (GPM), a team within Prudential's CIO Organization, coordinates and oversees portfolio management for Prudential's insurance businesses around the world. Each international business is subject to specific capital regimes, investment universes, regulatory structures, and support requirements which CIO addresses individually. In addition, Prudential (the “Company”) relies on GPM's Investment expertise to evaluate new investment opportunities as it seeks strategic opportunities for growth and income enhancement.

This Newark-based position will focus on Prudential's Japanese-domiciled portfolios, with some responsibility for portfolios supporting business reinsured from Japan to the United States.  The position reports to the Investment Senior Vice President, Head of Japan Operations Portfolio Management. The position will contribute to a team that directly supports the Head of Global Portfolio Management.

The current EWA for this position is Hybrid and requires your on-site presence as determined by your business. Your manager will provide additional details relative to the specific number of days you are expected to be on-site.

What you can expect:

  • Collaborate with a team that includes representatives from the investment staff of our foreign-domiciled insurance businesses in with creating asset liability management-focused investment policies and portfolio strategies.

  • Support the development and implementation of annual investment plans, and periodic updates of those plans.

  • Design and develop reports that provide critical information to senior management related to our investments and the performance of those investments.

  • Support the development of appropriate investment strategies for each portfolio.

  • Act as a liaison between GPM and local teams.

  • Collaborate with local investment teams on portfolio management topics:
    o Asset/liability management and portfolio construction
    o Analytic and implementation support for new investment initiatives, transactions and product development initiatives
    o Monitoring, reviewing, and selection of new asset managers
    o Follow market developments and understand how they impact the portfolio and strategy
    o Research relative value opportunities from a qualitative and quantitative perspective

  • Prepare senior management presentations related to the investment portfolio and key initiatives

  • Analyze positions and ALM positioning for our USD, JPY and AUD portfolios (along with smaller portfolios in other currencies).

  • Evaluate new asset classes and opportunities to enhance portfolio performance and diversification.

  • Lead and coordinate with local investment teams, Finance, Actuarial, Risk Management, Operations/ Systems, and other stakeholders in the development of portfolio analytics and reporting capabilities.

  • Provide technical advice and support to local investment officers on portfolio management/investment issues.

  • Evaluate product hedging requirements and related pricing considerations.

  • Build quantitative analytic and reporting capabilities

  • Facilitate and support an appropriate governance process and streamlined communication in all investment-related matters back to Prudential

  • Support, facilitate and influence our Joint Ventures partners to establish an appropriate governance framework aligned with Prudential Operating Principles, including IPS and local Investment Committees.

  • Represent GPM in portfolio performance review meetings, asset manager discussions, portfolio strategy meetings, and meetings focused on asset liability management. Due to time zone differences, meetings may be held in early morning or in the evening. Collaborate with affiliated and unaffiliated asset managers to understand market conditions, trends, and opportunities.

  • Coordinate foreign currency and other portfolio transactions and risk-hedging positions on behalf of our major international insurance operations.

  • Partner with other International Insurance functional representatives and corporate partners (e.g., Enterprise Risk Management, Corporate Actuarial, Treasury, and Finance) in addressing issues impacting Japan Operations portfolios.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What you'll need:

  • 7+ years of portfolio management or investment analysis experience within a financial services organization.

  • A BS/BA degree (or demonstrated proficiency) in a highly quantitative field such as statistics, mathematics, business, engineering, economics, computer science, finance, accounting or a similar quantitative subject area Ability to contribute to projects and initiatives as a team member, leader, or subject matter expert

  • A motivated, confident, curious personality and a desire to be challenged.

  • The ability to work well both individually and as part of a team.

  • Understanding of both US capital markets and global markets.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while working on multiple responsibilities.

  • High level of technical skills; including ability to develop complex data models in Excel and exposure to computer programming (Python, R, Excel, Power BI, Tableau).

  • Strong interpersonal skills, clear communication skills, team orientation, and the desire and ability to work with business partners of different national, cultural, and language backgrounds.

It'd is a plus if you had:

  • Knowledge of insurance liabilities.

  • Business-level proficiency in Japanese.

Note: Prudential is required by state specific laws to include the salary range for this role when hiring a resident in applicable locations. The salary range for this role is from $160,000 to $190,000. Specific pricing for the role may vary within the above range based on many factors including geographic location, candidate experience, and skills. Roles may also be eligible for additional compensation and/or benefits. Eligibility to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance. In addition, employees are eligible for standard benefits package including paid time off, medical, dental and retirement.
